Heartland Scholarships Return for 2017!

The Heartland Swing Festival & Collegiate Jitterbug Championships is happy to once again offer scholarships to attend our 2017 event. Read below for details on how to apply.

The following Scholarships will be available in 2017:

Individual Scholarships

Individual ScholarshipIf you heard about Heartland last year, you may remember dancers from all over the United States applied for and nominated fellow dancers for free-ride scholarships to the big event: HEARTLAND SWING FESTIVAL. This gesture was well-received, and it gave dancers who may not otherwise been able to attend, the chance to do so. We are proud to announce that these generous sponsors have decided to give again!

The original idea behind the scholarship started with Des Moines’ own Larry & Rae Mullica. The Mullicas began Step Into Swing, a Des Moines-based swing dance organization, over a decade ago and are still very active members in the swing dance community in central Iowa today. They run a weekly swing social as well as teach weekly, and have a heart for those who love to dance, but may not have the monetary means to supplement attending a large event like Heartland. Larry & Rae have reached out again for 2017 and sponsors have responded.

Heartland welcomes applications from and nominations of any dancer who is truly determined to learn and grow. While lack of money is one aspect that originally motived the implementation of this scholarship program, we place value on dancers from all walks of life. Here are some examples of people who qualify for application or nomination:

  • A scene leader who invests much time and energy into his or her swing community and nurtures its well-being. These types are truly valuable and oftentimes, hard to come by. This is the type of person who deserves a free ride.
  • A newcomer who has just started dancing and has never attended a weekend swing event, but who knows he or she wants to learn as much as possible.
  • A person who loves to dance, wants to learn, but has been down on his luck with family, relationships, finances, etc. and needs a pick-me-up!
  • A college student who has little time to work, and therefore no money to get out and dance.

The scholarship application is not limited to only those who fall into these categories. This is available for people who love swing, want to progress and plan to give back. Apply or give to a jitterbug by NOMINATING him or her for a FREE RIDE to HEARTLAND! What an opportunity! *(TRAVEL COSTS & LODGING ARE NOT INCLUDED WITH THE FREE WEEKEND PASS)*

It’s easy! Go to www.stepintoswing.com and find the “HSF Scholarship page.” There you will find two forms. One is for nomination of someone and one is for application. Fill it out and hit SUBMIT!

Apply or nominate starting now through December 25th, 2016. Decisions will be made the following week and the scholarship recipients will be announced on Facebook on January 1st, 2017.

Our sponsors this year are A-Tec Energy, Step Into Swing and Larry Mullica Carpet Care. A-Tec Energy is a local business dedicated to energy efficiency, and Rae Mullica has been employed by this corporation for the last several years. Step into Swing is one of Des Moines local organizations that promotes swing and its culture in central Iowa. Larry Mullica Carpet care is a Des Moines-based small business which provides customers with all their carpet care needs. We sincerely give a heart-felt THANK YOU to these companies who help sponsor aspiring Heartland dancers and competitors!

CJC500 Team Scholarship

teamThe Des Moines Swing Dance Scene is excited to host the battle for the Cutters’ Cup again in 2017. This is the sixth year that scholarships will be awarded to eligible swing dance teams. Past recipients include winners from Georgia, Arizona, Texas, and Utah.

The funds for this scholarship were made possible by the passion and hard work of the members of the Heartland Swing Festival (HSF) Committee. They are committed to supporting their peers in their pursuit to grow as dancers and promoters of Swing dance and Jazz music. Only US Amateur teams outside a 500-mile radius of Des Moines, IA are eligible to apply for the annual $500 scholarship. Special consideration will be given to collegiate teams.
